In the early days of Myrtaan, many people believed in the existence of a group of spirits known as The Ethereals. It was thought that praying to these spirits would sometimes entice them to help in situations where people where unable to help themselves. There were many stories of someone being saved by a spirit after they were trapped under rocks or captured by a deadly monster.
It was also thought that if someone prayed to the spirits in a selfish manner, asking for riches or luxury or other unnecessary things, that the spirits would be angry and punish those people. The stories told of a successful farmer whose crops stopped growing or a wealthy craftsman whose goods were suddenly worthless and falling apart, all because they had been selfish when praying to the spirits.
Very few people still pray to the spirits in current times as most do not believe that The Ethereals exist.
