Ruling Houses of Myrtaan
Each province of Myrtaan has a ruling house which is believed to directly descended from the one of the seven brothers.
Only the ruler has the surname of their province.
When the current ruler dies the eldest born son or daughter of the house becomes the new ruler. At this point they take the surname of the province.
The husband or wife of the current ruler has the surname of the province with the addition of bonded.
Siblings of the current ruler have the surname of the province with the addition of blood.
Children of the current ruler have the surname of the province with the addition of born.
When the current ruler changes, anyone who does not meet one of the above criteria but who has a surname with the province title included is required to change their surname to that of the province with the addition of kin.
For example some surnames in Thylar Province would be:
Current ruler – Thylar
Current ruler’s husband or wife – Thylarbonded
Current ruler’s siblings – Thylarblood
Current ruler’s children – Thylarborn
Current ruler’s parent – Thylarkin
Previous ruler’s siblings – Thylarkin
Children of someone who has a surname with the province title must take the surname of the parent who does not have a province title. If both parents have a surname with a province title then the children have kin attached to the name of the province where they are declared. For this reason most Kin will marry another Kin. It is forbidden to marry someone who has the same province in their surname as you.
